Aztecs Knock Out Bruins
3/15/08 Los Angeles
In a hard fought battle the Aztec's proved to be too much for an up and coming UCLA squad.  The team faced their worst adversity of the season and overcame a first half that could best be described as testing for all.
With a stiff breeze at their backs it was hoped that the team could play territorial rugby by consistently pinning UCLA back into their half.  Unfortunately, faced with a consistent series of miscues the Aztec side could not seem to get anything moving in their direction.  Instead UCLA was quick to pounce on to the Aztec handling errors and scored first with a nice try under the posts for a 7-0 lead.
With 10 minutes to go in the half the Aztec's capitalized on an ill timed handling error as the ball reached the far wing.  Alex Ross who was storming up in defense found himself on the receiving side of this an errant knock on and raced 55 meters to tie the game at 7-7.  UCLA refused to fold though and regrouped to put together another nice series of possessions leading up to another try in the corner.  With only a few seconds remaining a penalty kick that was rewarded by the touch judges was overruled by the referee leaving the Aztec's with their first deficit of the season at half time 12-7.
Stressing game pattern and intensity Coach Payne regrouped the side at the half time break urging them to play our pattern.  Unfortunately, the second half meant that the Aztec squad would have to come from behind into the building breeze.  To make matters worse UCLA struck first raising the margin to 19-7 with 30 minutes to go.
From that point on though it was all Aztec's.  Sticking to their pattern of strong forward movement and tieing up defenders the Aztec's were able to develop gaps in the defense of UCLA that the loose forwards and backs took extreme advantage of.  Four trys were rolled in after the first ten minutes to bring the final score to 32-19.
UCLA is a big physical team that gave it their all.  Once the Aztec team took the lead though they were all in the end zone with their heads down knowing the inevitable.  Defense and consistency to the pattern described the play in the second half and the Aztec's walked away with a hard fought victory.
Superior back play by Alex Ross and Alex Lichtig and star performances by forwards Ryan Howe and Joe Fontana should be commended on the day.
By beating the UCLA Bruins, State has narrowed the playoff picture in southern California to a race between UCSB and U of A.  UCSB secured a bonus point win in their last league game, placing the ball squarely in the hands of Arizona, who must play one final match against ASU; all Arizona must do is win the traditionally hard fought encounter since they have a head to head advantage over UCSB.        The Aztec A and B sides each went 2-0 this weekend, with the varsity team racking up a full 10 league points to cement their position as likely league champions.  This weekend marked the last home games for our departing seniors and special thanks goes out to them and their families for the many years of support and excellence that they have all brought to the team.
Friday night saw both the Aztecs and the Wildcats play a serious and entertaining match, with the Aztecs emerging 42-21 victors.  The Aztecs were led by their forwards, who starved the electric U of A backline of ball and provided go forward ball for the State backline.  The scoring was led by prop David Buboltz, who for the first time in his career scored not just one, but two well deserved tries.  The match saw awesome defense by entire Aztec backline, who managed to control most of the exchanges in the backs.  Sophomore Duncan Kelm scored a try converted each of the six tries scored, proving an important buffer between the scores, since Arizona also converted each of their three tries.
On the sunny Sunday afternoon, the Aztecs easily handled the visiting ASU Sun Devils.  Most of the scoring was in the first half, as the sun beat down both sides and the valiant Sun Devils refused to let the Aztecs have an easy day.  Freshman forward Kyle Quirk scored, while seniors Beau Russel and Lionel Lopez both bagged tries, while backs Jaime Purcell, Ken McKenzie, Matt Rose all added singles. Senior Alex Lichtig scored twice in his last game on the Aztec pitch.  Once again Duncan Kelm showed his class by scoring a try, slotting 8 of 10 conversion and kicking a penalty en route to the 69-0 win.
The second side excluded many fringe A-side players due to the double header weekend, but played with aplomb and enterprise.  Friday evening, they worked over the Wildcats 43-0,  and Sunday afternoon crushed ASU 62-0.
Contenders Clash
3/5/08 San Diego
Friday the 7th, the 16th ranked Wildcats will challenge the Aztecs at their home field.  University of Arizona enters this match looking to separate themselves from the pack and challenge both SDSU and Cal Poly for one of the top finishes in the league and a chance to travel to the round of 16 in Albuquerque.  The A-Side match will take place at 7 PM Friday night
Crunch Time For SCRFU
3/10/08 San Diego
In the race for first place in the SCRFU Collegiate league, the Aztecs need to secure seven or more league points to ensure finishing in the top spot.  The next hurdle lies in UCLA, where a tough opposition waits to try and spoil the Aztec's season. Although UCLA is currently fifth in the league, they have pushed the other top teams close, in each case losing by 10 points or less to Cal Poly, Arizona, and Santa Barbara, showing the best potential of all the teams remaining to spring an unexpected result and make a push for third place in the league.          To get to UCLA's field, Exit Sunset BVLD going east and park in Parking Structure 4 on Westwood Plaza just south of Sunset Boulevard.
Directions For UCLA
Both SDSU and Cal Poly have an unassailable league in the league standing, ensuring a chance to advance to the round of 16 in Albuquerque.  University of Arizona, UCSB, and UCLA are the third through 5th placed teams respectively and all have a shot at making the 2v3 playoff .  Arizona must secure a bonus point win in it's derby match over ASU to lock down the 3rd place spot with 31 league points.  UCLA has the next highest potential, but must overcome the Aztecs and Claremont and secure a bonus points to possibly attain 30 points, so they would need Arizona to lose or draw the ASU match.  UCSB has only one remaining match against Long Beach, which if they win with a bonus point and UCLA and Arizona each lose, will see them take the 3rd place league playoff spot with 29 league points.

Local news program showcased the team this past week in the light of recent march toward regaining the league championship and a probable return to the national collegiate tournament for the second year in a row. Reporter Derek Togerson interviewed coach Dan Payne, captain Joe Fontana and president Alex Main about various aspects of the game and the attitude that has helped make Aztec Rugby a force to be reckoned with.

Away Wins Over Gauchos
3/3/08 Santa Barbara
This past weekend saw the San Diego State rugby club post a clean sweep over UC Santa Barbara.
A long standing hurdle for the Aztecs was overcome this weekend, winning an away league game at Santa Barbara 33-10 against the Gauchos.  Conditions were perfectly suited to a great game of rugby, as the weather was sunny and mild, allowing both sides to play without worry of rain that had postponed this match for month.

Although lacking some of the spark and fire of previous years, Santa Barbara made the Aztecs work hard in all aspects of play, especially in the second half.  At the half, the Aztecs led 26-0 thanks to tries by wing Chris Bredesen, center Matt Rose, and others.  Rose's try was especially well worked, with Matt taking an initially burst before sending a pass to mercurial wing Alex Ross; Ross burst up the sideline, drawing the cover defender before passing back on the inside to the lurking Rose, who power through a last-grasp tackle to dot down the try.  The second half saw a resurgence that characterizes UCSB's games, when they put in two unconverted tries verses the Aztec lone converted try by Ryan Howe.  Howe exploded down on the weak side of the field, outpacing and weaving around defenders to score a brilliant solo try.  At the full time whistle the final score was 33-10 Aztecs.

The B-side match, graciously refereed by UCSB head coach Kevin Battle, saw the Aztecs in one way traffic.  Dustin Slikker captained the side from lock and Jamie Purcell, still fondly remembering his last game as a flanker, played scrumhalf like an additional loose forward.  Center Dan Sparks continued his dominating form and led the backline with punishing runs and solid defense, scoring a try and setting up at least three others.  The match saw several DII players playing in their second match in as many days; of particular note was prop Luc Rulon, who played a full 160 spectacular minutes on the weekend.  After the match, the Gauchos provided showers and a hearty meal of chili, salad and corn bread before the Aztecs made the long trip home.
Point Loma Falls
3/2/08 San Diego
After a couple of tough losses to the top teams in Southern California D2 league play the Aztecs got back in the win column with a solid 36-10 victory over Point Loma at Robb Field in Ocean Beach.  The Aztecs started slow and played defense for much of the first 20 minutes.  Point Loma got on the score sheet first with an unconverted try in the 11th minute following heavy pressure by their forward pack.  The Aztecs fought back from the restart and Austin Freeman charged down an attempted clearance kick in the try zone to level the scores at 5-5.  The scores stayed locked for much of the half until Joe Griffiths rumbled over the try line right before halftime to put the Aztecs up 12-5.  As has been the case all season the Aztecs turned up the pressure in the second half.  Seven minutes into the second half David Kreitzer dotted down followed by an Ian Higgins try five minutes later.  Midway through the second half the superior fitness of the Aztecs started to show.  Point Loma was not able to put anything together and the Aztecs enjoyed a majority of the possession.  This resulted in tries by Nick Mofsie and Werner Pieters.  Point Lomas only other score was a try right on full time.  Rookies, Dan Sciarretta and Mike Knight came off the bench and saw their first action as Aztecs.  All in all it was a solid effort.  We continue to improve each week.   Next up UC Riverside on 3/15.
Aztecs Cruise Past Tritons
DII Overrun by Loyola
2/23/08 San Diego
Friday night saw the Tritons visit the Aztecs at home for a crowd pleasing affair. The Aztecs were made to work against a  scrappy defense, especially in the first ten minutes of the opening half, until the backline started to find gaps off the play of flyhalf Duncan Kelm.  By the time the whistle sounded for the half, the Aztecs had posted 51 points.  Following the halftime interval, the bench was slowly emptied, allowing many fringe A-side players time on the field; of particular note was Tyler Kaushagan, who not only started his first DI game, but bagged two hard worked tries as well.  With this win, the Aztecs climb into second place in the SCRFU, with a game in hand and a head to head edge over Cal Poly. See our Standings Page for complete listings!

Saturday, the Division II second place Loyola Marymount team traveled to the Little Q for a late afternoon match.  Each team played different styles, with the Aztecs opting to play structured and thoughtful rugby and the Loyola attacking with their speedy backline or putting pressure with medium range kick and chase.  The Young Aztecs fell behind gradually in the first half with a halftime score of 5-24.  The second stanza saw the fitness of the Aztec forward pack become a greater factor as increased ball control and ruck contests frustrated Loyola.  The Aztec's offence remained stymied aside from hard charging runs by Luc Rulon and Jim Hurley while Warner Pieters and Ian Higgins provided deft back play.

First Half Blitz Powers Aztecs Over Cal Poly
2/17/08 San Luis Obispo
The biggest SCRFU collegiate league match was played last weekend at Cal Poly's home field. Ranked 7th in the USA, Cal Poly has been dominating the SCRFU with yearly league championships.  Even though the Aztecs beat them last year, the USD loss cost them a first place crown.

The start was remarkably close to last year's match  with the Aztec's racing out ahead with punishing runs from the loose, superior rucking and ball security which has become the Aztec's signature trademark. The halftime score was 22-7.  However the Mustangs made it a game in the second half in a gritty comeback.  The last 10 minutes of play were hectic with the Aztec's camped behind their 22 meter line.   The defense held though giving up zero penalties and zero points to stop the Mustangs.  Final score Aztec's 29 Cal Poly 26.

Flanker Ryan Howe, center Matt Rose and wing Alex Ross provided unbelievable defense and for Alex 2 trys were the turning point in the game.
Invitational Wins Over USD
2/9/08 San Diego
San Diego State's A side played cross town nemesis USD at Robb Field during the San Diego Invitational.  Adding flavor to the event, was the opportunity to showcase the new National Guard Rugby Kit in front of camera taking promotional footage.  When the game got underway, the Aztecs forgot all the distractions by putting 10 unanswered tries on the Toreros. Unfortunately, the only two of the tries were converted, leading to a 54-0 final.
States Rolls Claremont & Fullerton
2/2/08 San Diego
The SDSU Aztecs outscored their opponents this weekend 157-15 over three games.  The first match saw the division two team go into high gear, cruising to a 62 to nothing victory.  The A-side built a 26 point halftime lead despite the well organized defense of Claremont.  The final sccoreline was 45-7, with Claremont salvaging a late try.
A-Side:         W 45-7
B-Side:        W 62-0
Div II:        W 50-8

Schedule 2/2/07:
Claremont & Fullerton
1/28/08 San Diego
The first league match for the SDSU Aztecs will finally be held this coming weekend at home, against the second year Claremont team.  This will also be Claremont's first league game, after forfeiting their match against Cal Poly due to scheduling difficulties; Clarement decided to fill in for Stanford at the Denis Storer Classic in Los Angeles this past weekend where they played UCLA, OSU and Washington.

The Aztecs will be itching to get underway, with last week's season opener verses Santa Barbara being delayed by rain concerns for the grass field. This weekend also sees the third side try to shake off defeat and bounce back in a match against CSU Fullerton.

 Division II Stumbles
1/27/08 San Diego
The first league match for the SDSU Aztecs official third side took place this weekend against UC Irvine.  The game was played Saturday under the lights at the Aztec's home field with good weather holding out for most of the first half.  Both teams seemed to start tentatively, with Irvine playing more of a territory control game with lots of kicking, while the Aztecs sought to string phases together.  The Anteater's game plan soon paid off as pressure caused dropped ball turnovers inside the Aztecs own 22 leading to skilled pickups and tries by the Irvine inside backs.  Down 14-0, the Aztecs did not give up, but attacked the kickoff leading to a knockon.  This time the Aztec's strategy paid dividends by scoring a well worked try over many phases.  The weather then began to turn and with it the Aztecs washed away with two penalty kicks leading to a 20-7 halftime scoreline.

The second half opened quite differently than the first half, with the Irvine backline finding rhythm and beginning to exploit poor defensive organization by the SDSU backline leading to several long distance tries.  With the final whistle the score was 49-7 to UC Irivine.  The post match function was well attended by both teams and held at Woodstocks Pizza, with good deals and great pizza being hosted by player and manager Scott.
Aztecs Come Close in Vegas,
 Win At Home
6/28/08 San Diego, CA
Under the tutelage of coach Dave Disorbo the Aztecs sevens team continues to showcase the growth of San Diego State Rugby.  This year the team is participating not in collegiate brackets, but in men's open during tournaments, showing great results in their first two hitouts.  Additionally, the team has become more inclusive, featuring recent graduates such as Joe Fontana, Bryan Branch and Ryan Howe as well as community college students seeking to transfer into SDSU.
The first tournament was the Las Vegas Midnight Sevens Open Division, which, although played during the latter part of the day and into the night, started off in triple digit heat and never went below nineties.  The first game of the season saw the Aztecs narrowly defeat the Old Aztecs, in which the Aztecs struggled to break fifteens habits and play open rugby.  Progressing through the day, the Aztecs began to show great defense and continuity in avoiding contact long enough to break down opposing defensive pattern, allowing the Aztecs to reach the try zone.  The Aztecs reached the final undefeated, before falling one try short to another young team from the east coast featuring french exchange students.
Still disappointed from Las Vegas, the Aztecs were fired up and ready to play at home in San Diego at the Old Aztec Summer Invitational Sevens (OASIS).  The structure of this tournament was somewhat mired since some of the "competitive" division teams did not show up, so all teams were collapsed into pools, with the top four teams entering the competitive bracket, the second eight going to the open and bottom eight going to the social; each bracket was single elimination.  The Aztec team won their pool, which included a victory over Aztec Alum Zac Winter's Santa Monica.  The team progressed through the playoff to meet Santa Monica yet again in the final.  After an intense 20 minute game, the scores remained level and a sudden death overtime was played.  Well into the period, Mike Hicks worked his way through the defense to score the game winning try and State collected their first trophy of the season.  An Aztec B-side of sorts also participated in the tournament, drawing on players from SDSU and UCSD as well as some other young players new to the game.  Coached by Jim Wilson, who also featured at prop, the team lost their first game to Huntington Beach, but winning the remainder of their games to make their way into the social final against the Newport Sharks, who defeated the Aztecs by two tries.
Despite the great success of the Aztecs, they have yet to play one game with their sevens star Alex Ross, who has been a standout player with the OMBAC first side.  Of special note is his performance in the final of the OASIS tournament where he helped himself to two tries, leading the OMBAC team to victory over the Belmont (formerly Oxy) Tigers in a nail biting, high scoring affair.
The sevens team is led by captain Jamie Purcell. The players: Brendan Purcell, Mike Hicks, Bryan Branch, Anton Mironov, Ryan Howe, Alex Main, Kenneth McKenzie, Scott Brown, Joe Malim, Danny Rimsans, Duncan Kelm, Keenan, Dave Disorbo, with special guest appearance by Dan Payne.
Aztecs Named All-Americans
6/18/08 Denver, CO
USA Rugby has selected the 2008 Collegiate All-Americans, with several Aztec players being named to the squad.  Two players have been named outright All-Americans, with three others being listed as honorable mentions.  Captain Joe Fontana returns to the All-American squad and is joined by sophomore phenome Duncan Kelm; Duncan has enjoyed a great season since moving to flyhalf and had recieved a call up from the under 20 national team before being ruled out by an injury.
Prop David Buboltz and senior flanker Ryan Howe and fullback Alex Lichtig are named to the honorable mention list.  These Aztecs are hoping to be named to the All-American touring sqaud which is scheduled to travel to New Zealand later this year.  Good Luck!

Congratulations to Ante Drazina
6/5/08 Glendale, CO
Aztec 2007 Alumni Ante Drazina has made yet another great impression on the national scene, this time with the San Francisco based Olympic Club.  Although Ante has had several injures that had hampered him throughout the teams league season, Ante Returned to form in the national playoffs and started for Olympic in their playoff run.  Although Olympic is stacked with former and current Eagles and All-Americans, Ante showed his prowess are a hard working flanker able to compete at the highest national club level.

Dan Payne "I'm happy for Ante.  He's a warrior of a player and has carried on with his rugby in remarkable fashion.  He is, obviously, representing Aztec rugby proudly.  He continues to set a great example for our current players to live up to.  I look forward to the day when we have 25-30 former Aztec players playing D 1 and/or Premier League rugby in our country for the best men's clubs around.  The Aztec Rugby family is, both, proud and happy of Ante's acknowledgement.

Aztecs Lead the Way For SCRFU Griffins
5/29/08 San Diego
Twelve Aztecs players have been selected to the Southern California Griffins. Dan Payne said "I'm really happy for the guys that tried out and made the Griffins all-Star squad.  Not only is it a great opportunity to represent their home territory with Aztec pride, but, more importantly, it's an extra 2 months of rugby training and practice with which they can each improve their game.  Late spring/summer rugby, combined with our summer sevens program is a great time to 1) enjoy playing-first and foremost and 2) improve individual skills and overall understanding of the game.
After a break to regroup from a long season, most of our guys are now starting to get back in the weight room and they're getting started on Coach Richard's strength and conditioning program.
Hard work is the only way to get it done and I'm proud of the way the majority of our guys have embraced that concept!!!"

Calling All Alumni
5/1/08 San Diego
In order to keep all alumni up to date on the happenings of Aztec Rugby, we are compiling a list of contacts and basic information.

We're going to put forth a massive effort to reunite as many Aztec alumni as possible over the next ½ year, May 1 thru November 1.  Please, help me amass as many contacts as possible.  In order to enhance the efforts our players are putting out, it's imperative that we build a strong, unified, and vibrant alumni base.  Our goal is to build a program we can all be proud of year over year, on and off the pitch.  The team's recent success, a brand new pitch being built in the middle of campus and the amount of work our coaches and athletes are putting forth toward growing Aztec Rugby will all lead to something everyone can be proud of.

I'm now specifically requesting the added support of our alumni base.  Please, forward your contact info and help us continue to grow the Aztec Rugby Nation.

BYU Bounces Aztecs Out
4/19/08 Albuquerque, NM
Unfortunately, the Aztecs have played their final game of the season, losing to perrenial finalist BYU. Score 30-14.The Aztec's fell short of their bid of reaching the final four losing to BYU 37-14.  The final score was probably not indicative of how close the game became midway through the second half.  Conditions on the day were very tough, with the Aztec's facing a steady wind gusting from 15 - 20 mph blowing directly down the field to start the game.  This wind dictated field position.  Gains into the wind were quickly met with 50-60 meter kicks pinning the Aztec's back on defense.
The first twenty minutes of the game was played entirely in the Aztec's half.  Poached ball from BYU miscues resulted in 20 meter kicks into the wind for touch.  Unfortunately, BYU size made stealing line out throw ins very tough.  Lock Brian Branch did manage his share of steals though allowing the Aztec's some offense possessions.  At the 23rd minute mark BYU was able to create a gap in the middle of the defense and were able to strike first.  At the 30 minute mark a second score was pushed over by BYU.  Two penalty kicks raised the total to 20-0 at half.
Now it was the Aztec's turn to have the wind.  Sending booming kicks into the corners the Aztec's adopted the same strategy as BYU.  At the 15 minute mark wing Alex Ross sent forward a grubber kick past the defending wing and secured the bounce to score the Aztec's first try.  An inadvertent pass, unfortunately was picked off by BYU and they scored next.
Flyhalf Duncan Kelm was not to be denied on the day and off a dummy going out wide he made a lovely side step to open prairie.  The swift Kelm raced in from 30 meters to bring the score to 25-14 with roughly 10 minutes to go.  The pace of the next 10 minutes was incredibly frantic as the Aztec's threw everything they could at the defense of BYU.  In the end though it was BYU who was able to secure some fortuitous bounces and slot the final two trys.
In all, the team did not play their best game offensively as the strong wind made timing of the passes in the backs difficult.  On defense though the team was stellar.  Facing a significantly "older" and larger pack the team made tackle after tackle with  flanker Ryan Howe leading the way.
The team came up short on the day but had the respect of BYU.  Based on the pairing of the brackets both teams felt the other groups facing significantly lower competition.  The final four is now set with California playing St. Mary's a team they beat in league 58-3 and BYU playing Colorado.
The final will be probably be a rematch of last years teams California and BYU with Cal going on to win their 24th championship.  This should leave the Aztec's perhaps in the top 5 for the final National Rankings.  Here are the preliminary top 10 from American Rugby News.  (With a lopsided score the Aztec's could move into number four if Colarado loses both of their games handily).
1 (1) California (15-1) [5]
2 (2) BYU (13-1) [5]
3 (8) Colorado (13-2) [3]

Aztecs Advance Over Arkansas
4/18/08 Albuquerque, NM
The 2008 Aztecs have won thier first round game over Arkansas State by a score of 32 to 15. In the first half, the Aztecs utilizing the wind to advance in three tries by half.  Captain Joe Fontana powered over for two tries and winger Alex Ross had a blinder down the side for a 50 meter try.  Flyhalf Duncan Kelm slotted one penalty kick and 2 conversions to bring the score to 22-3 at half.
The second half brought out renewed vigor in Arkansas State and utilizing the wind they were able to slot a try at the 8 minute mark to bring the score to 22 - 10.  The next 20 minutes were tense with a well disciplined and very big Arkansas State team keeping the Aztecs pinned in their own half.
The Aztec defense held through a series of wave after wave of attack.  Finally, the team was able to gain possession back.  After a series of advances the Aztec found their selves on the 22nd meter line of Arkansas State with a tired defense sprawled across the field.  The Aztec team took advantage of the open space and winger Chris Bredensen was able to slot a try in from wing to the center posts.
A final try by Arkansas State was a little to little a little to late as the Aztec's answered right back with a penalty kick to end the game.

Over the course of the season, the Aztecs have played some of the most consistent and impressive rugby in recent memory.  With a record of 9-0, the Aztecs only clinched the league in their final game by emphatically beating Long Beach State in a shutout. Statistics show just how dominant the Aztecs were during the regular season by amassing 445 points for and 83 points against for an average scoreline of 49.4 to 9.2 in favor of the Aztecs.  The bulk of the scoring came from the 68 tries that the team scored, with the remaining 105 points mostly coming from the boot of Duncan Kelm.  Shutting out opponents are the most prized game aspect aside from the win, with the Aztecs pulling in 4 shut outs and two near shutouts during the season.
Head coach Dan Payne does not place too much emphasis on the offensive numbers, instead focusing on the quality and structure of the rugby that the team puts together; "...results are beginning to show. We're taking steps in the right direction and I'm really proud of the effort each member of our team shows."  Payne stresses the fundamentals of team pattern and defense, saying if the team does the basics correctly, that points will follow.
Heading into the upcoming national playoffs (See Bracket Here), the Aztecs have been ranked 3rd in the nation in the National Guard Collegiate Ranking.  This is the highest that team has been all season, with high expectations from players, coaches and supporters for producing memorable performances in Albuquerque.  The Aztec open against South #1 Arkansas State on Friday April 18th at 1:30 pm local.

Sincerely,

Dan Payne

Aztecs Clinch League, Undefeated
3/22/08 Long Beach
The San Diego State team posted a 66-0 win over CSU Long Beach to chalk up thier first league title and undefeated season in over 7 years. More details from American Rugby News:
#5 San Diego State has won the Southern California championship and at the same time has clinched the conference's #1 seed for the Round of 16.        The Aztecs claimed the title with a 66-0 drubbing of Long Beach State on the road Saturday in Long Beach, CA.
SDSU started sluggishly, but once they found their rhythm they were not going to be denied the title. The visitors led 26-0 at halftime and then proceeded to further dismantle the 49ers in the second frame.        The Aztecs racked up a total of ten tries with four players scoring doubles. Captain Joe Fontana, Alex Main, Mike Hicks and Duncan Kelm all dotted down twice. Kelm had an impressive 80% success rate with his shots at goal to round things out.
"The great thing is getting to the next round," San Diego State head coach Dan Payne told ARN. "Our league is a very competitive league and it's nice to see all of the hard work come to fruition."
SDSU closed out the regular season at 10-1 overall, while Long Beach Stated dropped to 3-7 overall.  The result means that #6 Cal Poly will finish second in the standings behind the Aztecs and will host the single elimination playoff game against either Arizona or UC Santa Barbara. The Wildcats are due to play Arizona State next week and if U of A wins they will secure third place. However, the Sun Devils can spoil Arizona's party by winning that final regular season game, which would help the Gauchos clinch third place.
The Aztec players will now enjoy a week off for their spring break before resuming a stringent training regimen. As Southern Cal's #1 seed, San Diego State will face the South's #1 team, either Tennessee or Arkansas State, in the Round of 16. The Vols and Tribe will square off next week to determine who gets the top seed.
