  Schedule Update: USD
1/16/08 San Diego
The league match between the SDSU Aztecs and cross town nemesis USD has been moved to Friday the 8th of February as part of the San Diego Invitational.  Kickoff for the match is 1 pm at Robb Field.  This move was partially precipitated by the desire for the players to be able to attend both days of the Petco Park USA Sevens Tournament and an opportunity to showcase the SCRFU league match in a large venue festival atmosphere.

Player Update
12/10/07 Sanford, FL
This weekend, players Rudy Salazar and Mike Hicks both traveled to Florida to take part in the National Guard Men's National All-Star Championships.  Unfortunately for Rudy, he was the back up to Eagle Mike Petri and never got a chance to show his skills on the field.

Mike Hicks played both games, starting on the right wing in both cases.  In the opening match against the Midwest, Mike started off hot, returning a kick some 50 meters.  All was not well for young Mike, after that run he became sick on the field.  Mike was steadfast and soldiered through to put a try in for the Griffins and many more great plays both defensibly and offensively.  With exciting play and hard work on defense, one can only wonder how long it will be before the 19 year old Hicks get's the U20 National Team callup.

  Winter Camp
12/5/07 San Diego
All players available must return to San Diego before Saturday the 12th. Training will be twice a day at 10:30 am and 4 pm.  Those without accommodations will be housed with those who live around campus.  It is strongly advised that players return fit and ready to get the most out of the training camp.  The coaches are looking forward to having everyone together to prepare for the league season.

Happy Holidays.
Aztecs Playing
Representative Rugby
12/3/07 San Diego
Several state players have been selected for both national and territorial honors.  Senior scrumhalf Rudy Salazar and Aztec rookie back Mike Hicks have been selected to the Senior Men's Griffins.  Rudy is the backup behind national team and former All American Mike Petri. Mike is hoping to impress the national selectors since at 19, he qualifies for the Under-20 team.  The two will travel to Florida to try and secure the Top Division championship for the SCRFU.

Second year players Duncan Kelm and Jamie Purcell will make a trip to Phoenix over the winter break to train at the Under 20 National Team camp. Jamie, son of former Eagle wing Mike Purcell, will be pushing for a spot at scrumhalf; Duncan will probably try to form a flyhalf partnership with Jamie, but is more than capable of playing in the centers as well.

Join all of the Aztec Family in wishing good luck to all of them!
Quick Update
11/18/07 San Diego
Aztec Rookies capped off a week of fitness testing with a game against the second division side UC Riverside with the Aztecs won 17-10.
State Dominates City Championship
11/18/07 San Diego
The annual San Diego city championship was contested this weekend at UCSD.  Point Loma did not make themselves available to play this year so only the division I schools SDSU, UCSD and USD participated. All the matches consisted of 25 minute halves.  The fist varsity match was between SDSU and UCSD, with the Aztecs completely dominating the set pieces; the only consolation for the Tritons was a single penalty goal.  The second match was similar to the first, with the Aztecs controlling play and field position effectively, but failing to convert the pressure to points for much of the second half.

The B-Side continued to show the depth of the Aztecs by completely blowing away the competition with impressive displays of running rugby.
Game Schedule 11/10/07
11/7/07 San Diego
This weekend the Aztec stay in town to play the Old Aztecs. The game times are as follows:

A-side kick off at 12:00 - two 40 minute halves
B-side kick off at 1:30 - two 30 minute halves
C-side kick off at 2:45 - two 30 minutes halves

The Old Aztecs will host a social afterwards, so bring any friends and family to get to know the family that is San Diego rugby.

Also, congratulations to Joe Fontana, who was voted Southern California's Collegiate Men's MVP for 2007!
Aztecs fail to find rhythm against Loyola
11/7/07 Los Angeles
The Aztecs A-side struggled to play their game plan this past weekend, with the Loyola team determined to make life difficult for the San Diegans. This yearly preseason match provides a starting point for both teams, however the cohesion of both teams left something to be desired. The Aztecs fielded many new starters, including a very inexperienced front row consisting of two rookie props and a recent transfer to hooker at different stages in the game. A bright side for the Aztecs was the continued resurgence of the attacking line out as well as glimpses of real pace out wide.

The second side match was a completely different affair from the first side. The Aztecs, fielding a true second running side, faced the leftovers from Loyola, including some very tired A-side player pressed into fill out a compete XV. The Aztecs ran up 70 points in the 75 minute match.

Aztecs Run Out of Time
10/6/07
Playing in two 25 minutes halves, the Aztec A-side fought to a narrow 19-12 loss to an OMBAC team fortified by super league and former national team players.  The short halves favored the visiting OMBAC team immensely, while lax substitution allowed OMBAC to field as many as 17 players until the referee intervened.

Next weekend the Aztecs travel to Salt Lake City to take on Utah. Check back for updates!

Weekend Games
10/5/07
With Head Coach Dan Payne back stateside, the Aztecs look to pick their play up a notch by playing an OMBAC team. This will be the second time the first  XV has taken the field, but the team will be expecting a much tougher encounter than last week's combine Old Aztec/OMBAC motley team.

The third  side will kick off against Point Loma at 11:30 AM for two 40 minute periods, followed up by a 30 min period. The OMBAC game will follow at about 1:45 PM.

Dan Payne to Start
9/28/07
Head Coach Dan Payne is set to play his first Rugby World Cup match for the USA Eagles this Sunday. Dan comes into the pivotal number 8 shirt after beating out Henry Bloomfield and the injured Tasi Mounga. They are set to play one of the tournaments favorites, South Africa, who are coming off a terrifyingly close win against Tonga. Having rested many of their starting players and nearly paying the price, South Africa will want to dominate all aspects of play with aggressive, polished rugby.

Fall Schedule Released

The complete fall schedule for the Aztecs has been posted on the Results Page. This year's schedule incudes a third side that will participate in the SCRFU Collegiate Division II; the third side will enable those players who normally get 20 minutes a weekend the opportunity to play full game, as well as providing a more appropriate level of competition to newcomers.

Further news: Both our coach Dan Payne and captain Joe Fontana have been nominated for SCRFU Awards this year.  Dan, who is currently in France with the national team has been nominated for two awards, Coach of the Year and Rugby Personality of the Year; Dan was also the winner of last year's Super League MVP award.  Joe, fresh from captaining the Aztec's return to national playoffs, captaining the SCFRU Collegiate Griffins, and All-American duty, returns to San Diego as a strong contender for the Collegiate Men's MVP. We wish them both luck. See Joe in action in our updated Pictures!

Summer Sevens Wrapup
9/10/07
This past summer OMBAC graciously sponsored an unofficial Aztec Collegiate Sevens team.  The Aztecs competed in four Southern California tournaments: Sevens in the Sand, ERAC Sevens, Long Beach Sevens, and the Las Vegas Midnight Sevens.  Over the course of competition, the team fielded up to two sides per tournament and ended with a record of 20-5; the highlights of the season were winning of the Jack's Division (Collegiate) in the Midnight Sevens and the Open Division of the Long Beach Sevens, overcoming other collegiate teams and men's teams to take home the trophy.

Several players showed impressive skill and ability in their first season of sevens, such as Chris Bredesen, Alex Main, Matt Rose, Alex Ross and Rudy Salazar.  Special recognition goes to Alex Ross as he was invited to participate in the USA National Sevens training camp in Long Beach, CA this fall.  We all wish him the best of luck in this combine style camp!
