Aztecs Working Hard Over Summer

6 of the San Diego State rugby players have spent the last week training with the Serevi Rugby Academy

Summer in San Diego is not only for tanning and hitting the beach.  For State rugby players it means preparing for the season.  With the Aztec 7s program in full swing under head coaches Matt Hawkins and Richie Walker, and the season just around the corner they are hard at work tuning their skills.  For the past three days 6 of the SDSU rugby players have been participating in an elite rugby camp run by the Serevi Rugby Academy.  The camp featured guest coaches Waisale Serevi, Gordon Tietjens, and Santiago Gomez Cora.  Waisale Serevi was a longtime Fiji Captain and regarded as one of the best players ever in the game of 7s.  Gordon Tietjens is the current coach of the New Zealand 7s team and has coached his side to several World Series titles.  Santiago Gomez Cora captained Argentina and holds the record for number of tires ever scored.  With this wealth of knowledge the state boys have been training hard, running new drills, and taking fitness tests.  Loose forwards Mike Shea and Jake Poliakoff, utility back Kevin Green, captain and hooker Jaime Kelm, lock Noah Maypole, and scrum half Brendan Winbrock have all been working hard at two practices a day.  Congrats to these boys for putting in the work.
