Aztecs Perform Admirably in Inaugural Sevens Collegiate Championship Invitational: Fall in Semi Finals To Champion Utah PDF Print E-mail

Columbus, Ohio:
In the first ever USA Sevens Collegiate Championship Invitational of the top 16 collegiate rugby programs, the Aztecs performed live on NBC in the sevens code of rugby putting in a powerful performance that included 4 straight victories before eventually following in a closely contested match to eventual National Champion University of Utah in the semi finals. 

 

Coached by SDSU assistant and former USA 7’s International Dave Disorbo, the Aztecs were led by current USA International 7’s player Alex Ross, All-American Duncan Kelm, as well as Mike Hicks, Jamie Purcell, and Chris Bredeson.  The Aztecs swept through pool play be defeating Tennessee, Florida, and Indiana.  They followed those victories with a quarterfinal win over Dartmouth before falling to Utah.  This was the Aztecs first appearance on the National Stage in the recently inducted to the Olympics code of Sevens Rugby (7 on 7 players at a time).  The Aztecs put a fine performance and represented the program and University proudly live on national network television.   For the Aztec’s, Junior Duncan Kelm was named to the All-Tournament Team.
