Riverside, CA

The SDSU D3 rugby team chalked up a win with a come from behind victory against U.C. Riverside on Saturday.

Playing a man down the Aztecs started slow and UCR took advantage of missed tackles and scored  three tries in the first 20 minutes to take a 17-0 lead.  Midway through the first half the Aztecs suffered another setback when prop Sebastian Hernandez had to leave the game with an ankle injury.  With 13 guys left on the field, SDSU didn't quit and started making tackles behind the gain line.  This pressure turned into points when lock Kyle McSpadden took a quick tap from five meters out and scored the Aztecs first try.  Right before halftime wing Bren Winbrock dotted down for the Aztecs and the score was 17-12 Riverside at the break.
In the second half SDSU continued to pressure Riverside with well timed kick and chase tactics.  Bren leveled the score sheet with his second try on a quick pick and go.  Midway through the second half Joe Hearn gathered a kick down field and offloaded to hooker Eric Fuhs who ran it in for his first try at SDSU.  Joe Silvestri made a penalty goal in the 76th minute to put SDSU up 25-17.  With time running out Riverside broke the Aztecs line and scored a late try to pull within one.  After three minutes of injury time SDSU won posession and safely kicked the ball in to touch.
