Las Vegas, Nevada
The Aztecs lost their first two matches of the season this weekend while competing at the Las Vegas Invitational.

On Friday 2/12, the Aztecs took on perennial powerhouse Cal in a game that was the feature match of the day, showcasing two of the top collegiate programs in the country.  Cal got out to a shotgun start, while the Aztecs looked shell shocked for the opening quarter.  Four Cal Tries in the first 15 minutes, along with a Cal drop goal brought the score to 29-0, essentially sealing victory for the Golden Bears.  However, following the opening quarter the Aztecs were able to adjust to the pace and compete evenly for the remainder of the match.  The remaining first half saw the Aztecs score a try through Dave Buboltz on a lineout drive, while Cal would score twice more for a half time score of 46-5 Cal.

The second half saw the Aztecs grow further in confidence and performance and they were able to outscore Cal 14-6 through the work of 2 tries, one from flanker Michael Shea and one from Winger Chris Bredeson, both of which were converted by Duncan Kelm.   The final score was Cal 52- SDSU 19.

The following day, a reserve grade San Diego State team took on a mixed first and second side from Central Washington University.  The Aztecs gave an overall lack luster performance, resulting in a 28-0 defeat.  The Aztecs lacked intensity throughout the match and will look to rebound this next Saturday.

Despite the two losses, Head Coach Matt Sherman felt the team achieved what it went to Las Vegas to do, which was to be challenged and to learn more about themselves, ‘We came here to compete against very difficult opponents and challenge ourselves, and not just the first 15, but 33 guys played this weekend.  While we take home two losses, we also take home a lot of lessons that we’ll now get busy trying to learn and correct so that we improve on the whole.’

The Aztecs return to league play this weekend when the much improved UCLA Bruins come to town.
