The Aztecs pushed their record to 5-0 by recording their second consecutive shutout, and by beating the Arizona Wildcats for the second time in two weeks, this time by a score of 27-0.

The game was a stop start affair, marred by bad weather including rain and heavy wind.  Nonetheless, the Aztecs were able to battle through the Wildcats and the conditions to build a 12-0 halftime lead.  They followed that up with a stronger second half performance, scoring 3 tries into the wind and securing their fifth league victory.

The Aztecs used the wind at their backs through the first half to control a majority of the field position, but were only able to capitalize twice.  Tries by Prop Darrell Honaker and Flanker Tyler Kaushagen, one of which Center Duncan Kelm converted gave the Aztecs a 12-0 halftime lead.   The Aztecs were able to successfully play into the wind in the second half, forced to keep the ball in hand, they were able to work the ball into the Wildcat half, leading to three tries, one each by Center Jamie Kelm, Winger Mike Hicks, and replacement prop Morgan Gagel.  Head Coach Matt Sherman was pleased with the defensive effort and the way the team was able to handle the poor conditions, ‘While we probably didn’t use the wind as advantageously as we could have in the first, we adjusted well playing into it in the second period.  Furthermore, I think our defensive commitment and pressure was very good at times, and we’re always happy to come away with a shutout.’

In the B Side match, the Aztecs produced a 26-17 match winning performance.  Tries by Renzo Garcia, Zach Shapiro, Kyle Fitzpatrick, and Dale Turori, of which Turori converted 3 paved the way to victory.  The game was a back and forth affair, but the Aztecs were able to capitalize on the wind in the second half to secure victory.  Turori and Shapiro both had standout performances, as did 8 man Andrew Hinkle and Flanker Mike Shea.

Earlier in the day, the Division 3 team lost a closely contested match to UCSB in their third league match of the season to bring their record to 1-2.

The Aztecs will play 2 matches this weekend as they travel to play in the Las Vegas Invitational in conjunction with the USA Sevens IRB World Series Circuit.  The Aztecs will take on perennial powerhouse Cal-Berkeley on Friday afternoon, then take on leaders from the Pacific North West, Central Washington on Saturday.
