UCSB: Santa Barbara, California.
In their second league game, and second consecutive game on the road, the Aztecs defeated UCSB 51-3 to push their league record to 2-0.

The game featured a much stronger performance then the previous weeks match vs. UCLA, and the Aztecs were able to put considerable pressure on UCSB defensively and in the scrum and line out.  The Aztecs had a balanced attack and maintained pressure throughout most of the match scoring 5 first half tries, and 4 in the second half, complimented by 3 Duncan Kelm conversions.

The first half featured a very strong performance by the Aztec forwards, in which they drove over two lineout drives for tries scored by Alex Main and Dave Buboltz.  The forwards also made their way onto the score sheet with a stolen scrum 5 meters out, with 8 man Tanner Kouba diving over.  Ryan O’Conner was the beneficiary of defensive pressure scoring his first of two tries on the day, while Alex Ross also found his way to the line on a well executed back line move.  The half ended with the Aztecs up 29-0.

The second half featured an early try, and second of the day, from Alex Ross, on a wide backline attack 3 minutes in.  Anton Mironov then found his way in try zone in the 50th minute to bring the score to 39-0.  The Aztecs then hit a lull for the next 20 minutes, something they’ll work to address.  In the 55th minute prop Morgan Gagel was Yellow Carded for repeated infringements at the scrum, and moments later UCSB found their way into the Aztec half for a penalty goal.  The match concluded with two Aztec tries, one in the 72nd minute on a back line move that Duncan Kelm finished off, and another in the dying moments on a great individual effort by flyhalf Ryan O’Conner, when he kicked on a loose ball twice and reclaimed it at the death of the game for a try.

Head Coach Matt Sherman was generally pleased with the improved performance, ‘Our number one goal from game to game is to always improve, and in general we played better today, specifically in some areas we targeted from last week.  Nonetheless, it was by no means perfect and we’ll go back to the drawing board and start to prepare to improve for what will surely be a tough match on the road against University of Arizona next week.’

In the B Side match, the Aztecs fell to a strong UCSB Academy side, featuring many Santa Barbara City College players 27-3.  The lone Aztec points came from a drop goal by Aztec flyhalf Joe Sylvestry.  The Aztecs were generally pushed backward in the set pieces, as well as the contact area, and will look to make considerable improvements in these areas as they hope to bounce back from the defeat in their matchup vs. the University of Arizona next week, as they were disappointed in their overall performance

The Aztecs will play their 3rd league game, and 3rd in a row on the road at the University of Arizona this Saturday 1/23 with the B Side match at 12pm and A Side match at 2 pm in the Rincon Vista Complex.
