2/18/12

Following a closely fought 7 point loss to 3rd ranked UC Santa Barbara and a weekend full of sevens in Las Vegas, the Aztecs took on cross their cross town rivals the University of San Diego Toreros.  The 4th ranked Aztecs travelled to USD to play their third league game under the lights with a late kickoff of 8 P.M.

The squad started fast with multiple punishing tries from the forward pack and a penalty conversion by flyhalf Kalei Konrad in the first minutes.  A worn down Torero defensive line was then broken by Noah Maypole who centered a long run under the posts.  USD kept their offensive possessions limited to mostly crash balls to their big forwards off of the ruck, but state was up to the challenge pushing back wave after wave of runners.  Newly minted flanker Nick Mazzilli had an outstanding game on the defensive side of the ball, chopping down Toreros and turning over ball for the Aztecs.

The second half saw the Aztecs stick to what had been working for them in the first 40 minutes.  The team ran their offensive pattern and wore down the defense, leading to beautiful line break tries from Morgan Gagel, Derrick Broussard, Tommy Hebard and Frank Ramos.

SDSU thoroughly dominated USD in the scrums throughout the entire game.  The Aztec pack provided a great attacking platform and continually disrupted the Torero scrum, turning the ball over and causing havoc for their scrum half.  A few late tries from USD brought the final score to 54-17 in favor of the Aztecs.
