On February 1, San Diego State University’s Aztec Rugby Club played their opening league game of the season against UC Santa Barbara. The Aztecs went into this inaugural game determined to make a statement. Led by captain Jake Polliakof at hooker, San Diego State scored early and often. Ten minutes into the first half, the Aztecs led 10 to 0 with two unconverted tries. The Gouchos responded by converting a penalty kick. These three points would be UCSB’s only points of the day.

The San Diego State offense continued to prove dangerous from everywhere on the field, as they continued to extend the lead. At game’s end the Aztecs had scored seven tries from seven different players. Three of these scoring Aztecs were freshmen Austin Switzer, Dalton Wimmer, and Adahir Aguilera. With the first win cemented 46 to 3, the Aztecs now look to take on Santa Clara in their first away game, Saturday, Feb. 8th at 1pm.

Welcome to the new season rugby fans! This past weekend marked the club's maiden voyage into the 2013-2014 season with the West Coast 7s tournament in San Luis Obispo. The event served as a good opportunity to dust off some cobwebs and start developing some synergy between the verterans and the new recruits. The Aztecs began the day with a close win over UC Santa Barbara followed by a tought loss against a greatly imroved UC LA side. Sophomore Trevor Christiansen showed great toughness as he played every half of the team's four games that day. The final game of the day against Cal State Long Beach started with a 21-0 deficit for the Aztecs at the half. A critical substitution of Austin Switzer, a promising rookie, pushed the pace of the side's offense in the second half. Senior Ted Kassen, who made his first appearance on the day for the Aztecs seven side, aided the team with some strong rucking and hard runs that helped the Aztecs score 19 unanswered points in the second half. It was a great day to get some playing time for new and returning players alike and a great day for Aztec Rugby!

San Diego State University is pleased to announce SDSU alumni Alex Lichtig has signed on as the next head coach of Aztec Rugby. With Matt Hawkins stepping away to continue his pursuit of full time international rugby sevens, the Aztecs began the search for a new coach at the start of summer. Luckily, it did not take long to find a candidate with the enthusiasm, dedication and rugby knowledge to take SDSU to the next level. Alex Lichtig brings both his personal SDSU rugby knowledge and international experience, from his time playing in North Shore New Zealand for the legendary Buck Shelford. Arriving with coach Lichtig are a cast of fellow All Americans including forwards coach, Joe Fontana; tight five specialist, Brendan Purcell; and strength and conditioning authority, Alex Ross. Alex Lichtig had this to say, “I am excited to take on the role of head coach at SDSU and am looking forward to the challenge. This is truly a great time to be involved with the Aztec Rugby program and I am confident we can capitalize on opportunities to succeed both long and short term.” SDSU is pleased to announce that the administrative dealings of selecting new leadership for the team is over. Aztec Rugby is ready to return to what it does best; Rugby!
